What is a Serial Number?
According to Wikipedia, A serial number is a unique identifier assigned incrementally or sequentially to an item, to uniquely identify it. Serial numbers need not be strictly numerical. They may contain letters and other typographical symbols, or may consist entirely of a character string.
Serial Number VS Service Tag
You are probably wondering if serial number and service tag are the same thing? The answer is arguably Yes.
The definition of a service tag, for instance, HP is the sticker that contains the model number and serial number – not the unique identifier itself, which is the serial number. Personally, there should never be any computer that would register both a service tag and a serial number, as they’re literally the same thing.
